Phoenix dactylifera ‘MEDJOOL’

Since our introduction of the Medjool Date Palm to Florida in 1990, she has proven herself to be the most versatile, disease resistant and just plain gorgeous palm variety that is available for use in the United States. That may sound a bit arrogant but the proof is out there in the world for all to see and there is just no denying it. Medjools are just as good for use directly on the beach as they are for use in almost every microclimate in the southeast. With thick silvery green to dark green canopies, wide leaflets and a high frond count, Phoenix dactylifera var. Medjool is a truly stunning palm. Medjool canopies consistently deliver a lush, sexy appearance with canopy spreads of 24-25’ and trunk calipers averaging 16-18 inches. The petiole layer is removed using hand tools only (no wounds through the petiole) yielding a distinctive raised diamond shape trunk appearance that is beautiful and functional. Medjool’s are all around magnificent palms that blend well with a wide range of other landscape materials.

Culture:
Medjools are not all that picky about the soil conditions they thrive in but there are a few very important rules that installers will want to adhere to; we will ask you how and where you are using them then give you field proven, location specific recommendations that when followed will yeild reliable performance.

Sun Light:
Medjool Date Palms prefer full sun environments.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 9 - 11. In Zone 8b, palm enthusiasts grow Medjool’s in sheltered locations but occasional freeze damage to foliage can be expected up in Zone 8b and below. Anywhere above zone 8b is perfectly safe and in our experience, this species will come through the winter with little or no frond damage whatsoever.

Availability:
Groundworks holds nationally exclusive availability totaling 10’s of thousands of exceptionally farmed Medjool Date Palms in sizes ranging from 8 to 30’ of clear trunk and we stock hundreds of gorgeous Specimens at our nurturing farms in Boynton Beach Florida and Alvin Texas.

Groundworks never delivers these palms from our desert production felids directly to the client jobsites in Texas or any location east of Texas. There are too many things that can go wrong and there are too many ways that failed expectations can result. Instead, every Medjool we deliver is processed at one of our nurturing farms in Texas or Florida where each is fully hand detailed, any weak sisters or defective trunks are weeded out and set aside in our Kmart sections and the palms are grouped in matching sizes. When you ask Groundworks for “matching”, “matching” is exactly what you get, every time and you will never hear us telling you to “make it work”. Groundworks never asks for deposits up front; we cover all of the costs and carry 100% of the risk to present your palms locally, in a fully “site ready” state, ready for your inspection and hand selection. Even after you have hand selected, you will have the right to reject palms during the first ten days after delivery and Groundworks will redeliver at no additional charge. Groundworks means “Dedicated Reality” where this species is concerned and our goal is to prove that to you.
